OCR: MARS: GENERAL INFORMATION MARS: GENERAL INFORMATION Composition of the Martian atmosphere: MARS'S SATELLITES Carbon dioxide (CO2): over 94% The martian Nitrogen (N2): 3.3% subsoil Argon (Ar): 1.7% Carbon monoxide (CO): 0.13% Oxygen (O2): 0.09% Water (H2O): 0.025% Atmospheric Ozone (O3): 0.000003% pressure readings Traces of krypton and xenon Temperature: The temperature can vary between - 1000 and 70C. Viking I recorded a maximum daytime temperature of 24º C at the Chryse Planitia site. The average low was Close-ups -85º C. (During the summer of 1976, Mars was almost at of the planet its aphelion-the point in its orbit farthest from the Sun.) The weather readings provided by Viking I were highly regular. They showed the atmosphere is slightly clouded by fog at an altitude of 15 to 25 kilometers. Winds are Mars's sometimes very violent, reaching a speed of 200 kilometers south pole per hour, and as much as 400 kilometers per hour during sandstorms. These remarkable storms raise dense clouds of sand and dust that hide the sun for weeks. It then takes several months for the dust to settle and the atmosphere to clear completely. MARS BETAT
